Start with the TN eligibility and application overview
Describe the statistical work precisely
Identify the methods selected, assumptions tested and conclusions the applicant is responsible for drawing. Distinguish professional statistical analysis from other reporting or administrative duties where relevant. A dashboard can present statistical results without showing that its operator performs the proposed professional work.
Use the listed degree requirement
Mathematician, including Statistician, lists a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree. Establish the actual qualifying education and its relevance rather than assuming years of spreadsheet use substitute for that route. Degrees from institutions outside Canada, Mexico and the United States require reliable foreign-credential evaluation. Do not represent a software-training certificate as the listed degree.
Complete the nationality and work-arrangement assessment
TN requires Canadian or Mexican citizenship, qualifying prearranged professional activity and temporary entry. The employer may be U.S. or foreign. Services to a U.S. entity solely owned or controlled by the applicant constitute prohibited TN self-employment, even with a nominal supervisor; ownership of a foreign business alone is not an automatic bar. Describe the actual parties and proposed duration alongside the analytical duties.
Step two: assemble the credential and the citizenship proof
Institutions typically hold several records beyond the transcript: a degree conferral or completion letter on registrar letterhead, a certified statement naming the credential and the date awarded, the diploma itself, and in some cases a verifiable online credential record. Once the degree comparison and licensing question are answered, assemble the job offer, duty description, transcripts, evaluation report, and any licensing correspondence into one file the reviewer can assess as a whole. A job title like 'systems engineer' or 'product engineer' does not by itself confirm which USMCA profession applies, and engineering credentials vary by discipline and licensing jurisdiction. Published guidance treats a Scientific Technician or Technologist as working in direct support of a professional in one of those listed disciplines. The applicant should carry the original licence, degree, transcripts, the signed offer letter, proof of citizenship, and evidence of intent to depart at the end of the period. The single record that settles a contested field is the institution’s official program description for the year the credential was granted, held by the registrar rather than by the applicant. Where the degree sits in an adjacent field, obtain the course-by-course transcript and, if needed, an evaluation addressing the biological content specifically. A technologist admitted to support engineering work who is then assigned to supervise a sheet-metal line has left the profession claimed, and any later extension or re-entry will be measured against what actually happened.
Identify which listed profession the duties actually describe
Canadian citizens generally seek TN admission in person at a port of entry or a preclearance facility, presenting the passport, the supporting letter and the credential, with no visa stamp involved. The letter should state the profession by its listed name, describe duties that are forestry duties, such as inventory, harvest planning, regeneration assessment and compliance with state forest-practice rules, and give the location, remuneration and intended length of stay. Use authentic credentials and any expressly permitted alternatives; experience cannot universally replace a degree. An agency’s acceptance of experience does not create a degree alternative absent from the profession’s rules.
