Read the general eligibility basics overview
A Beaumont household may include a Canadian citizen pursuing TN and a spouse who is a Canadian permanent resident with another citizenship. Assess each person’s proposed role instead of applying the principal’s nationality requirement as though every family member were seeking TN employment.
Identify the actual principal applicant
TN requires Canadian or Mexican citizenship; Canadian permanent residence alone does not meet that requirement. The principal also needs a listed profession, the relevant qualification, temporary entry and a permitted professional arrangement. A spouse’s Canadian citizenship cannot be borrowed to qualify the other person as a TN principal.
Assess the dependent relationship separately
An eligible spouse and unmarried children under 21 may seek TD status, subject to the applicable requirements. The TN principal’s Canadian-or-Mexican citizenship condition is not itself a requirement that every dependent share that nationality. Verify the actual relationship, principal’s status and any required TD visa or applicable exemption from the real circumstances; a Canadian residence card does not determine all U.S. visa procedures.
Keep work plans out of the dependent assumption
TD permits study but not employment. A dependent who wants to perform statistical consulting or another job needs a separate assessment of appropriate work authorization. Professional education and the principal’s employer support do not remove the TD work restriction. Plan the household’s actual activities rather than describing dependent eligibility as permission for both spouses to work.
