Can industrial-design qualifications alone make routine production work eligible for TN?

THE DIRECT ANSWER

No. Both the applicant’s qualification and the actual professional activity need to fit. A credential does not transform every proposed task into industrial design.

Assess the complete assignment

Explain design decisions, prototypes and other responsibilities without hiding material work. The listed routes are a baccalaureate or licenciatura, or a qualifying postsecondary diploma or certificate with three years of experience. Citizenship, temporary entry and a permitted professional arrangement remain necessary. Avoid either excluding every hands-on task automatically or treating a design title as permission for any factory role.

TN status requires actual Canadian or Mexican citizenship; permanent residence in Canada does not itself establish eligibility, regardless of how long the person has lived there or how strong the job offer is. Confirm this distinction early with the applicant so expectations about timing and required steps match the actual process rather than assumptions carried over from a Canadian citizen colleague's experience. The Scientific Technician/Technologist entry can work, but it carries its own conditions: theoretical knowledge of the discipline, the ability to solve practical problems, and a role that supports a professional such as an engineer.
