THE SHORT ANSWER

A Spruce Grove spouse may be qualified to design products, own property or help manage the household’s business. Those facts can be relevant, but they do not by themselves establish permission to perform work in the United States.

01

Describe the planned activity concretely

Identify work, self-employment, remote services and any proposed unpaid assistance, together with the person’s location. A foreign payer or family relationship is not a substitute for immigration authorization. A professional licence may also involve separate practice rules that an immigration approval does not eliminate.

02

Apply the dependent distinctions

TD permits study but not employment. Qualifying E and L spouses may work incident to valid status with the appropriate evidence; children do not receive that spouse authorization. Check the individual classification and authorized dates rather than relying only on the principal’s petition, job offer or ownership records. Eligible TD, E and L dependents may study while maintaining their status; school enrolment does not extend that status, and immigrant CSPA rules do not extend temporary dependent eligibility. The relevant dependent relationship is an eligible spouse or unmarried child under 21.

03

Separate permanent-residence planning from present permission

Investor payment or petition approval does not itself grant residence or current work authorization. Immigrant derivatives generally enter with or after the principal. Review children’s ages and any available protection using the actual case. Keep current work, school and travel commitments conditional on the person’s real authorization rather than a future family plan.
