Start with the TN eligibility and application overview
Identify the change from advice to responsibility
Describe the earlier recommendations and the new work: who will make operating decisions, supervise delivery and remain accountable for the client’s business. Do not assume every implementation activity is excluded, but do not relabel a continuing operational position as consulting without analysis. The actual duties and arrangement matter more than preserving a familiar title.
Retain the management-consultant qualifications
The listed alternatives are a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree, or equivalent professional experience supported by a statement or professional credential attesting to five years in management consulting or five years in a specialty related to the consulting agreement. Assess the relevant evidence; generic seniority is not the complete experience account. Degrees from institutions outside Canada, Mexico or the United States require reliable foreign-credential evaluation.
Review the current TN foundation
Canadian or Mexican citizenship, prearranged professional activity and temporary entry remain required. The employer may be U.S. or foreign, but providing services to a U.S. entity the applicant solely owns or controls is prohibited TN self-employment. Preserve the prior filing and new proposal for assessment of both eligibility and the appropriate procedure before the changed work begins.
The employer letter must describe professional practice
A state practice licence is a separate question from the qualification rule attached to the listed USMCA profession. Several enumerated professions name recognized professional credentials as an alternative to a degree, so the first step is to read the entry that applies and confirm which route the file will rest on. If the answer is engineering assessments, design reviews, laboratory analysis or advisory reports, that is the duty description the file needs. Whether TN admission requires a licence depends instead on how the profession is listed, since some listings name a state or provincial licence as an alternative to a degree while others do not mention licensure at all. Two records carry this comparison: the listed entry for the profession, with the minimum requirement stated in it, and the applicant’s credential in its issued form — the parchment, the transcript, or the licence certificate naming its issuing body and its scope. The issuing institution's transcript or confirmation letter is the record that resolves what the credential actually says. A Canadian citizen professional may request TN admission in a border inspection process or use an employer’s USCIS I-129 petition; neither option permits a self-employed U.S. arrangement.
Check the credential rule for that specific profession
Some institutions will reissue a diploma or transcript under an updated legal name, while others will only provide a letter confirming that the record belongs to the person now using a different name. TN credential requirements are profession-specific and come from the listing itself, not from general rules about degrees. Canadians may present the case at a port of entry or preclearance, or the employer may file an I-129, and no visa stamp is needed. Check the name on the diploma, transcript, passport, and offer letter at the same time.
