A St. Albert family may be considering a new professional role while an older child approaches a dependent-status age boundary. Review the child’s own status, study and work plans alongside the principal’s change, without assuming one approval resolves both.
Start with the child’s own eligibility and record
Identify age, marital status, classification and authorized period. TN-related TD eligibility covers an unmarried child under 21; study is permitted, but TD does not authorize employment. A school’s acceptance or the parent’s longer contract does not itself preserve dependent status past its applicable limits. Eligible TD, E and L dependents may study while maintaining their status; school enrolment does not extend that status, and immigrant CSPA rules do not extend temporary dependent eligibility.
Separate spouse and child work permissions
Qualifying E and L spouses may work incident to valid status with the applicable evidence. Dependent children do not receive that spouse authorization. A proposed internship, remote job or family-business task requires review of the actual activity; a Canadian payer or unpaid description is not a substitute for authorization.
Keep immigrant age rules and entry order distinct
If the family also pursues permanent residence, review any available child-age protection using the individual case and dates; do not assume an automatic freeze from payment or filing. Immigrant derivatives generally enter with or after the principal. A promotion or business expansion should not cause the household to overlook the child’s separate deadlines or possible independent process.
