Start with the TN eligibility and application overview
Identify the engineering work across both relationships
Describe the proposed analysis, design decisions and deliverables, together with material installation, operating or administrative duties. A client’s engineering department does not make every assigned task professional engineering. The employer’s letter should accurately reflect the work the applicant will actually perform, including the client’s expectations.
Use the listed qualification route
Engineer is a listed TN profession with a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree, or a state or provincial licence. Establish the actual qualifying credential and its connection to the work. Degrees from institutions outside Canada, Mexico and the United States require reliable foreign-credential evaluation. A document showing professional qualifications does not itself describe the proposed duties or resolve every separate practice requirement.
Keep the employment arrangement and temporary entry clear
The applicant must be a Canadian or Mexican citizen with prearranged qualifying professional activity and temporary entry. The employer may be U.S. or foreign. Providing services to a U.S. entity solely owned or controlled by the applicant is prohibited TN self-employment; appointing a project supervisor does not remove that issue. Ownership of a foreign business alone is not a blanket disqualification.
Confirm citizenship, the employer and the entry route
Some institutions will reissue a diploma or transcript under an updated legal name, while others will only provide a letter confirming that the record belongs to the person now using a different name. Canadians may seek TN classification through the applicable border or preclearance process, subject to inspection, or an employer may pursue an I-129 route with USCIS. Canadian citizens generally may seek TN admission at an eligible land port of entry or a preclearance location without first obtaining a TN visa, though an employer may instead choose a USCIS petition in appropriate circumstances. Order a certified transcript and degree confirmation from the registrar, locate a citizenship certificate or passport, and, if professional registration is relevant, request a letter of standing from the body that holds it. Industrial contracting employers often use "engineer" loosely for roles that are properly engineering technologist or technician positions, which sit under a different Appendix 2 entry with its own rules. Assemble the technology diploma, course transcripts, any field certification, continuing-education records, and project evidence showing practical problem-solving or application of the discipline. Meeting an education-and-experience alternative does not convert a general marketing or account-management offer into the listed profession. Order the credential evidence in the sequence a reviewer reads it: the awarding institution, then the program length and completion date, then the experience that the diploma or certificate route requires.
Use the listed profession’s actual qualification rule
Obtain the signed contract first, then the letter written from it, then the diploma with transcripts and three or more years of experience confirmed by former employers in writing. Each USMCA profession has its own qualification rule, and the officer applies the one attached to the profession named in the letter. A first conversation should compare the applicant's actual credentials against the specific listed profession's requirements, rather than assuming transferable skill or workplace experience closes the gap.
