Start with the TN eligibility and application overview
Describe the publications and responsibilities
Identify the intended readers, technical subject matter and the applicant’s responsibility for explaining the product or process. Distinguish other marketing, sales or administrative writing where relevant. Do not hide material duties under a technical-writer title or assume that a product brochure and an operating manual establish the same professional activity.
Use the actual listed qualification route
Technical Publications Writer permits a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree, or a qualifying postsecondary diploma or certificate plus three years of experience. The diploma and certificate have defined program and issuer requirements, including at least two years of postsecondary study; a brief course is not automatically a qualifying alternative. Degrees from institutions outside Canada, Mexico and the United States require reliable foreign-credential evaluation.
Complete the professional arrangement
TN requires Canadian or Mexican citizenship, prearranged qualifying professional work and temporary entry. The employer may be U.S. or foreign. Services to a U.S. entity solely owned or controlled by the applicant constitute prohibited TN self-employment; a nominal editor or supervisor does not cure that issue. A foreign business interest alone is not an automatic disqualification. Explain the real recipient, work and ownership alongside the writing samples.
The employer letter must describe professional practice
Canadian citizens do not need a visa for this category and normally seek admission in person at a land border or a preclearance facility, presenting the passport, the employer's letter and the credentials together. Requesting transcripts, ordering a credential evaluation, asking the institution to restate the appointment terms and having counsel assess the proposed profession can each be repeated or corrected at no lasting cost. Engineer requires a baccalaureate or licence; Scientific Technician/Technologist requires theoretical knowledge of a discipline and the ability to solve practical problems, with the work performed in direct support of a professional in that field. For a Canadian citizen, the usual initial request is made to a CBP officer when seeking admission; an employer may instead submit an I-129 petition to USCIS for an extension or change of employer. A credential may fit the listed occupation and still leave a state-specific licence, registration, supervision, or employer requirement to investigate before practice begins. Compare that description against the engineering profession's recognized scope rather than the title on the offer letter. In practice, this means an applicant may seek TN classification at a border or airport inspection point, while the alternative is an employer-submitted I-129 petition. Official degree records, transcripts, licences where applicable, and experience letters answer different parts of the analysis; a persuasive duty letter cannot cure a missing qualification required by the selected profession.
