May a TD spouse sell the products the chemist is testing?

THE DIRECT ANSWER

TD does not authorize employment. The relationship between the products and the principal’s assignment does not give the spouse permission to sell them.

Separate the sales proposal from laboratory work

An eligible spouse or unmarried child under 21 may seek TD and may study while maintaining that status. Describe the spouse’s actual sales activity, location and customer relationship. Canadian payment or an unpaid label is not U.S. work authorization. Assess any independent permission before treating anticipated sales income as part of the household’s move budget.

Separately confirm that the principal is a Canadian or Mexican citizen, has prearranged USMCA-listed professional work, satisfies the profession’s own credential requirement, and will not be self-employed in the United States. A dependent who is not a Canadian citizen may need to obtain a TD visa before travelling, while a Canadian citizen dependent generally seeks admission directly, so confirm the applicable procedure person by person instead of inferring it from the principal's route. Where a dependant holds a different citizenship, such as Canadian citizenship by birth or naturalisation, their entry route may differ entirely, so confirm each person's documents, relationship proof, and any visa requirement before a joint travel date is booked.
